short-term missions trips

Something happens to us when we get out of our comfort zone and participate in what God is doing in other countries. While it is our hope and prayer that we will be a blessing to those we visit, we always seem to return from these trips realizing how much more we received from the experience than what we gave. Somehow, our view of God and His kingdom is enlarged. Here at First Covenant, we offer a variety of opportunities for people to experience cross-cultural missions.

Mexicali: For over 20 years we have developed relationships with numerous churches in this border town of Mexico. Mexicali is a great introductory experience for youth and adults. High school and college students form the core of the group that travels south of the border each year during spring break. Teams work with local churches to provide Vacation Bible School programs for children, athletic events and concerts for youth, family worship services, outreach events, and community service projects. Although the focus of Mexicali is on the students, you don’t have to be a student to participate! Adults are needed for base camp, kitchen crew, construction team, drivers, translators, and team leader coaches. A men's team visits a nearby prison to share testimonies and prayer. A group of our seniors work with elderly residents in a nursing home and with the senior ministries of local churches. Applications are available in the fall for students and adults.

Guatemala: This nearby neighbor is a nation of contrasts, with a growing middle class but also extreme poverty. It is a great site to experience multiple types of ministries, including education in impoverished communities, health care and nutrition for needy families, Christian media, prison ministry, sports outreaches, and youth programs. High school, college and family teams can serve in Guatemala.

Colombia: Covenant missionaries Gary and Marylou Sander have hosted both men's and women's teams in this South American nation. Mission opportunities include work projects, evangelism, men's and women's ministries, youth work and much more. We plan to send men's and women's teams to this location regularly.

Thailand: A beautiful culture with beautiful people, this nation possesses one of the most horrific prostitution industries in the world. Our Women's Ministries has established a relationship with Rahab Ministries, an organization that is offering alternatives to girls and women caught in the sex-trade. Lives have been changed with the message of hope and freedom found in Christ!

India: The Hindustani Covenant Church (HCC) serves as our hosts for short-term teams coming into this land of diversity and rich culture. As our congregation prepares to establish a missionary team in India, short-term trips to the nation are a great way for more of us to catch the vision for what we hope to accomplish there. HCC is involved in a wide array of ministries including agricultural development and training, job-skills training, hospitals and medical relief, disaster relief, education, outreach to sex-workers and eunuchs, care for lepers, programs for children and families who live at the garbage dumps, and so much more.
